Introduction
*sigh* How does Twilight actually ENJOY busywork like this? I'd rather be doing some hooves-on lessons...
But, as principal of the School of Friendship, I owe it to the students to find them the finest educational texts in all of Equestria!
And THAT means reviewing this year's newest batch of textbooks...
Let's see... "The Changeling Account" looks good... "Biology of Bugbears" is A-OK... "Legends of Rockhoof" is... wait, this isn't right...?
All of these are second-hoof accounts... but Rockhoof is alive and well today! In fact, he's Equestria's official Keeper of Tales!
Shouldn't this information be straight from the source -- Rockhoof himself?
Rockhoof? Ooh, you came just in time! He's hosting an educational meet-and-greet at his home village today! I was just about to attend, if you'd like to come with me...
Huh... I guess that's one opportunity too good to pass up. I'll join you, then!
Whoa! It's way more crowded here than I thought! Get ready, Twilight... we're gonna have to battle our way to knowledge -- by shuffling insistently, yet politely!
End of stage 1
Hail, Twilight Sparkle... and companion! I noticed you fighting through the crowd with great honor and composure. Surely you wish to ask me a boon. Well?
(Go ahead, Starlight. Don't be shy!)
R-Right! Um... Mr. Rockhoof. Sir. It seems the legends of... you... in our school's curriculum are not entirely accurate...
So I was wondering if I could hear the tales of your exploits, straight from the source himself? I'll be taking notes, if you don't mind!
Hrm... Not a problem. I'll begin, then. After I diverted the lava's flow with my trusty shovel, I was at last accepted into the Mighty Helm -- the elite guardsponies of my land...
Rockhoof's dream came true when he was accepted into the Mighty Helm. He quickly impressed his fellow Helmsponies with his strength, speed, and tenacity... all thanks to his strict training regimen!
End of stage 2
So you owed your success to your training routine?
Aye, sister. Every day, a healthy meal, an early bedtime, and my trusty shovel by my side...
Your shovel? The Mighty Helm let you use your shovel during training...?
... Although unorthodox, Rockhoof's skill with his shovel was so great, he was allowed to keep it as his primary combat tool. He quickly proved to any neighsayers how wrong they were!
End of stage 3
You must've been quite the celebrity! Were you very popular with the other recruits, Rockhoof?
Well... I admit, I was not used to all the attention. I tried to stick to my routine, but...
My new comrades insisted I join them for a night on the town. I thought... I'd trained so hard, for so long. Surely I deserved the smallest and shortest of breaks...
So, egged on by his friends, Rockhoof... went totally bonkers. He took every tavern challenge in the village, eating his weight in oats, kale, corn... every veggie imaginable, in quantities unimaginable...
End of stage 4
See, if you could eat the whole boat bowl of oats, the entire meal would be free, so--
Y-Yeah. I get it. So you were doing these tavern challenges...
The feasting... oh, the feasting...! So blinded was I by the raucous cheering of my comrades, I couldn't see what was happening to my own body!
Rockhoof had gotten so out of shape from his constant partying, even the village foals could best him in competition! He felt as weak as he used to when he was just a colt...
End of stage 5
What a transformation! That must have felt awful, Mr. Rockhoof...
To be honest, I hardly noticed it. I strove to carry on as I always did, albeit with... a bit more difficulty.
It wasn't until I was called to address the worrying rumblings of the very same volcano I had thwarted once that I was made to feel my true weakness!
Rockhoof -- huffing and puffing, but no less determined -- haltingly ascended the volcano to assess the problem. Every step of the way, his "friends" invented excuses to give up, but he carried on...!
End of stage 6
So, did you make it to the top? Was the volcano going to blow?
Well... No, I did not succeed, to my great shame. I knew I had nopony to blame but myself. It was my dream to join the Mighty Helm, and I had made light of that dream...
My captain gave me a thorough talking-to. She said if I couldn't be counted upon, I could go home, and she'd take on the task herself.
I could not accept that! Captain Steela had recognized me as a member of the Mighty Helm: I needed to prove to her that my word, any my heart, were true!
Rockhoof trained! Twice as hard! And when it came time for Steela to scale the volcano... Rockhoof was there! Together, they discovered the beast responsible for the flying globs of magma!
End of stage 7
So it was a cherufe up there? And it was throwing molten rocks around?!
Indeed. In fact, it nearly melted my shovel -- which gave me an idea... I thought: Why was this creature tossing turf about in the first place?
Of course... it was digging! I took my shovel in hoof and assisted the beast. Surely it had a good reason for enduring its task...
... And I was right! The cherufe was but a child, and its mother was just below the crust! Once they were reunited, peace returned to the volcano, and to our village.
What a story! But... don't tell me you went back to partying--
I did!!! However, I now understood the importance of balance. I would celebrate when appropriate, and stay healthy by adhering to my training routine!
Ending
That Rockhoof is really something, isn't he? It's amazing to talk to a living legend... And he's so humble, too!
Hehe! Yeah, Rockhoof's a good guy. And you're a great principal for going to these lengths for your students!
Eheheh... I just want them to get the best bits of knowledge Equestria has to offer. Plus, this is WAY more exciting than your average textbook!
Thanks, Twilight. I'll call on you again the next time I need to talk to an ancient hero, or somepony like that!
